C8 Power Reserve Chronometer
DescriptionWhen our Calibre SH21 movement was launched in 2014, its designer, Johannes Jahnke, promised that it would provide a canvas for him to experiment with further innovations and complications. The new C8 Power Reserve Chronometer shows this has now become a reality.
With its DLC (diamond-like carbon) black case and dial, highly legible indexes and Arabic numerals, the C8 PR COSC carries with it many of the design cues of famous aviation timepieces like the Spitfire's Mark II A Smith's clock.
The dial is equally impressive. At the 9 o'clock spot is the power reserve subdial, while an altimeter-inspired date calendar is at 3 o'clock. The date wheel's numerals have been laser cut into the metal, with the present date highlighted from behind.
Movement-wise, the watch is powered by a hand-wound version of SH21, complete with power reserve complication - making good on Jahnke's promise. Furthermore, its twin barrels - both of which are engraved with impressions of wind turbine blades - can be seen through the exhibition caseback, while the exquisitely designed new bridge frames the ensemble beautifully.
MovementMechanically, the hand-wound version of Calibre SH21 is every bit as impressive as its automatic sibling. On an aesthetic level, however, its design has been embellished with a level of detail that demands attention.
Calibre SH21’s new bridge has been modelled using design principles similar to those in the fuselage of aircraft, where strong and lightweight materials are key. Its twin barrels – decorated here for the first time – will deliver five days of timekeeping on one full wind. It's also a COSC-certified chronometer - putting it in the top six per cent of Swiss-made watches for accuracy.
This is before any mention of JJ’s all new power reserve complication - as promised in the name of the watch – which adds invaluable monitoring for the wearer. To facilitate this, the additional engineering required is meticulous: on top of the 112 components that assemble a hand wound SH21 movement, another 28 are needed to complete the latest remarkable member to the SH21 family.
