The moon is the star
The moon is the star
At Christopher Ward, our in house Calibre JJ04 moon phase movement has powered numerous gorgeous watches, but none quite as elegant or romantic as the appealingly compact new C1 Moonphase 37.
Our new Moonphase’s brushed-and-polished C1 Light-catcher™ case is more elegant than ever at its reduced 37mm dimensions, combining style and subtlety in a perfectly balanced package that’s perfect for smaller wrists, or discrete and refined on larger ones.
First created near Venice some 400 years ago, aventurine is a very special sort of glass, infused with reflective copper oxide flakes. With its entire dial made of this most charismatic of materials, the new Moonphase is able to perfectly imitate the star-speckled night sky. Since each piece of aventurine is different to any other, it makes every watch unique.
When you’ve got visuals this glorious, what else do you need? Nothing much, we’d say – which is why the Moonphase 37 is so beautifully minimalist, shorn of indexes, markers, and even the twin-flags logo to really allow our moon and its midnight blue firmament to shine.
You’ll rarely find a moon as bold as ours on any watch, but what makes the Moonphase 37 so remarkable is that we actually have two of them, mounted on a second aventurine disc revealed through a generous window in the dial. They’re made of Globolight©, a ceramic and Super-LumiNova compound that can be moulded into any shape.
Glowing a crisp white, and covered in realistic craters, our moons are amongst the most photo-realistic representations of our nearest celestial neighbour you’ll ever see.
Calibre JJ04 rather brilliantly links the movement of the moon to the hour hand, so both are in constant motion. Each phase of the moon is represented through smooth, flowing movement rather than little hops. Kept constantly wound, it will deliver accuracy for a remarkable 128 years.
We’ve upgraded our fine Italian leather straps, which now come fitted with our improved Bader buckle and a quick-release system for no-hassle swapping. They taper pleasingly down to 16mm for the first time too.
Alternatively, wear yours on a steel Consort™ bracelet. Built of five rows of brushed and polished ultra-slim segments, held in place by a nigh-invisible butterfly clasp with micro-adjust mechanism allowing for easy small adjustments.

Meet Calibre JJ04: perpetual perfection
Most moon phase complications transition once per day, but not our in-house Calibre JJ04 module, piggy-backing on Sellita’s robust SW220-1. Instead, it offers a more dynamic approach, using four wheels to drive the moon disc, and two more for the setting mechanism. The result: a constant, smoothly moving moon.
Built around surely the most romantic of all watch complications, our Moonphase echoes the waxing and waning of the moon with great accuracy – and for a mighty 128 years. For all this time, your watch’s own moons will chart a graceful unbroken journey across the dial’s star-splattered night-time sky.
Mad about the moon
We’re so keen to bring the Moonphase to more people, we moved heaven and earth to design a new C1 case at a more compact and accessible 37mm, while still allowing space inside for the moon phase complication.
Moon night
With a spectacular dial made from aventurine – a special glass, invented on the island of Murano, that’s infused with reflective flakes of copper oxide – the Moonphase 37 represents the night sky with eerie accuracy. The beautifully stripped-back watch face carries nothing else (unless you count a tiny ‘Swiss Made’ legend) to ensure minimum distraction from your enjoyment of the lunar cycle.
Lovely moonchild
Watching a great movement in action is one of the joys of traditional mechanical watchmaking, and with the Moonphase 37 you can do so effortlessly, thanks to a box sapphire exhibition back, upgraded from the flat glass of the 40.5mm version. The decorated rotor you’ll find here is the only place on the entire watch where the words ‘Christopher Ward’ appear.
Funky Gibbous
We’re renowned for our full-blooded celebrations of the moon, so even on a more compact watch like the Moonphase 37, we’ve made certain to put our satellite front and centre, standing proud at 12 rather than hidden way at the bottom of the dial. Rarely has such an elegant piece been so glitteringly alive.
Moon bright
Built of Globolight©, a ceramic/Super-LumiNova mix that encourages the most intricate sculpting, our moon – or moons, for there are actually two in constant rotation – are 25 percent bigger than most. Even better, the over-sized nature of the aperture you view them through allows you to see more ‘moon’ at any one time.
Strap in for launch
Crafted in a supple seta leather, the Moonphase 37 comes with a luxurious blue Mastrotto strap. With its taper improved to 16mm (from 20mm), redesigned stainless steel Bader clasp it provides maximum comfort and is the perfect companion for both the 37 and 40mm case sizes.
