A habitat in crisis
The ocean contains over 90 percent of all habitable space on earth and houses incredible biodiversity – from towering coral reefs, to shoals of sardines and soaring manta rays. It also produces over half of the planet’s oxygen and absorbs over a third of the world’s carbon dioxide.
Billions depend on seafood as their primary food source, but overfishing empties the ocean of life. Over 90 percent of global fish stocks are overexploited and nine out of 10 large fish species are extinct. Marine ecosystems are under threat from climate change, acidification, pollution and invasive species.
The 30 x 30 global goal
Blue Marine’s vision is a healthy ocean full of life, that keeps our climate stable and supports all who depend on it. The organisation is focused on supporting the global mission to protect at least 30 percent of the ocean by 2023.
When Blue Marine began 14 years ago, just 0.2 percent of the world’s oceans were protected. Today, that’s eight percent. But it's not enough and many marine protected areas are still overfished or bottom trawled. We’re approaching the midway point of this crucial decade in ocean protection – and there’s a lot to do.
“I grew up by the sea near Liverpool, and still live by the coast for part of the year, so I have a deep affinity with what Blue Marine is trying to achieve. We’re incredibly proud of the funds we and our customers have raised so far – but we know that’s only the beginning. I’m hopeful the money generated by our new Trident sales platform will make a real difference in the mission of 30x30.”
