A True GMT
A True GMT
Few complications feel as practical, or as quietly satisfying, as a True GMT. Built for those who cross borders and time zones, it allows the local hour hand to jump independently while a fourth hand keeps track of home, and the date looks after itself, moving forwards or backwards. Elegant, intuitive, and wonderfully mechanical, it’s long been regarded as the most refined expression of the travel watch. But for any brand, creating one from scratch is no small undertaking.
Which is exactly why we did it.
Painstakingly developed over three years under the guidance of Technical Director Frank Stelzer, CW-002 builds upon the architecture of our existing CW-001 calibre, integrating an entirely new GMT mechanism without increasing the movement’s height. The result is a technically sophisticated, COSC-certified movement that joins a small circle of true peers.
Creating it was far from straightforward. Limited space meant that every component had to be precisely integrated to fit within the movement without increasing its height. In total, 23 parts were introduced: 16 entirely new, and seven carefully modified from the existing movement. A new plate, hand-finished and visible from the dial side, supports the GMT wheel and enables the efficient placement of these additional components – an elegant solution that keeps the calibre slim, robust, and beautifully balanced.
The dial tells that technical story. Designed with deliberate hierarchy, it places the most important information – local time and home time – front and centre with the addition of a raised, circular brushed ring to support the indices. Meanwhile, secondary indications sit subtly recessed alongside a contrasting, grainé finish. A small seconds display sits at six o’clock, a power-reserve indicator at nine, and at three o’clock the exposed GMT bridge reveals the circular-brushed GMT wheel beneath – a technical landscape designed to reward curiosity.
Housing it all is a newly developed 40.5mm Light-catcher™ case, fitted with box-domed sapphire crystals front and back. The case’s carefully balanced proportions ensure the watch sits comfortably on the wrist, while alternating brushed and polished surfaces emphasise the signature Light-catcher™ geometry. Completing the design is a newly refined Bader bracelet with polished bevels on each link, a graceful taper, and a micro-adjust clasp for travelling comfort. Or a new FKM rubber strap – snuggly integrated at the lug with a textured upper and deployant Bader buckle.
The result is something special: a watch that elevates the Sealander platform into new territory. Still the go-anywhere, do-everything companion enthusiasts love – but now reimagined as Sealander’s first Atelier offering, powered by a movement that places Christopher Ward firmly among the small group of brands capable of producing a True GMT calibre of their own.
Calibre CW-002
Calibre CW-002
Calibre CW-002 is a rare ‘true’ GMT movement, which enables the wearer to change the hour hand to their local time, without disturbing the other hands.
Conceived by technical director Frank Stelzer, it’s built on the foundations of Calibre CW-001 – formerly ‘Calibre SH21’ – the five-day, twin-barrelled movement we launched in 2014.
In total, 23 components have been used in its construction: 16 newly designed and seven modified from existing parts.
The first True GMT calibre from a British brand, CW-002 is COSC-certified and joins the small, elite circle of GMT movements. Built on CW-001, it integrates a new GMT mechanism without increasing movement height.
40.5mm Light-catcher™ case with box-domed sapphire crystals front and back, alternating brushed and polished surfaces, and balanced proportions for everyday comfort.
Diamond-polished hour, minute, and small seconds hands, all filled with Super-LumiNova® for low-light legibility; GMT hand and power-reserve indicator lacquered for contrast.
Partially open and deliberately layered, the dial prioritises local time and home time while recessing secondary indicators. Small seconds, power reserve, date, and exposed GMT bridge add depth and utility.
Rhodium-plated movement with circular Côtes de Genève, visible twin barrels and balance wheel, and a tungsten rotor with sunray-polished and sandblasted surfaces.
Applied markers, polished and faceted, filled with Super-LumiNova® for clear visibility in all conditions.
