With a daily routine that involves cleaning algae off endangered coral and swimming about a bit, the parrotfish doesn’t live the celebrity lifestyle.

But to Blue Marine it’s a superhero, keeping the tropical oceans’ ecosystem balanced and preventing algae from suffocating coral reefs. It also grinds up dead coral – and excretes it as white sand, helping to maintain beaches.

That’s why it’s the inspiration for the new Trident 30x30: the first watch that directly promotes and supports their goal of having 30 percent of the oceans protected by 2030. Limited to 500 pieces, for every watch sold, we’ll give 2 percent of the price to Blue Marine, plus an extra £30 as a bonus.

The new wave-patterned dial is impossible to ignore, and mimics the ebb and flow of the tides. “This pattern is bespoke – and designed only for this watch,” says designer Matthew Sweatman.

The link to the parrotfish comes from the teal and red colour scheme, inspired by the #FishForTomorrow campaign by Blue Marine and The Maldives Resilient Reef. The project raised awareness of the link between coral reef health and that of the local fish population, one of which is the parrotfish.

In terms of visibility, the baton-shaped indices and handset are deep-filled with Super-LumiNova® Grade X1 BL C1, which provides an ultra-legible glow when lights are low.

The watch uses a four-piece 41mm ‘sandwich’ case, first launched with last year’s Trident Reef, allowing designers to bring contrasting shades together in the same case. It also provides water resistance to 200m. Power comes from the 26-jewel Sellita SW200-2 Power + movement.

As a final nod to the work of Blue Marine, the Trident 30x30 is presented in a sleeve made from Notpla seaweed paper. Created from renewable seaweed and plant-based materials, Notpla is designed as a regenerative alternative to traditional packaging, helping to reduce waste while celebrating the potential of ocean-derived resources.
